DONT’ BE SHY
Frequently Asked Questions
Some people are put off starting yoga as they are unsure what to expect. Here are some questions we get asked along with general information we thought you might like to know.
How long are classes?
Classes last for 60 minutes unless otherwise stated. It is a good idea to arrive about 5 minutes before a class so you can set up your mat etc.
What happens in a class?
In a Yoga Hatha class, whether online, or in person, I will guide you through a gentle warm up, followed by some strengthening and stretching poses. We will join movement and breath, and flow gently from one pose to another. You will stay on your mat the whole time and the class will end with some relaxation! You will walk out calmer, more relaxed and more in tune with your body.
What do I have to wear?
Absolutely anything that you can move in comfortably – word of advice though, leggings or shorts that have a zip pocket at the back (usually found on running ones) are not recommended as they tend to dig in when lying down on your back). Bring a warmer top or jumper for the relaxation at the end of the class!
What equipment do I need?
You will need a water bottle and a yoga mat. I can highly recommend Yoga Matters mats as an entry level, Yoga Bare for a mid price point and Liforme if you really want to splash out!
You can bring yoga bricks and blocks if you have them, but they are not a necessity. It is also an idea to bring a towel with you as a support sometimes should you find you need to.
Do you provide mats and props?
During the current climate, unfortunately we don’t provide mats or props. You can easily pick up a mat online. If you would like some recommendations, please contact us and we would be very happy to help.
How much are classes?
Prices vary depending on class type etc, please check the pricing page for more information.
Are the classes mixed ?
Yes, we want everyone to feel included. We do not ask you to do any poses, etc, that should cause you to feel uncomfortable that there are other genders there.
Are the classes suited for all abilities?
Unless specifically stated that a class is for a certain level, all classes are taught with different pose options for mixed levels, whether you have a little or a lot of experience.
What shall I do for my first session?
When you arrive for your first session, we will gather some medical information to ensure that you are safe to practise yoga and then we will show you where you can place your mat so you can see the teacher. Please arrive 10 minutes before the class so we can answer any of your questions and help you feel comfortable. Everyone was once a beginner so you will be well looked after!
What is Hatha Yoga?
Hatha Yoga is a style of yoga that is most commonly taught, especially for beginners. It links movements or postures with breath, and poses are generally held for a few breaths at a time. There are always options with every posture that either make it more accessible or more of a challenge.
What can yoga help with?
Yoga can help numerous different things, for example:
– Improving flexibility
– Increase muscle strength
– Increase respiration
– Larger functional range of movement, meaning happier joints!
– Improved mental health and decrease in anxiety
– Reduction of headaches
– Reduction of tension in the body
I can’t touch my toes, is yoga for me?
Yoga is for EVERY BODY! Whether you can touch your toes or not. Yoga is about joining breath with movement, so if you breath and you have a body, you can do yoga!
How often do I need to practise yoga?
Yoga is a fantastic way to calm, reconnect with your body and reconnect with your breath. You can practise it as little or as often as you want. We recommend attending at least one class a week and then using what you have learnt in the classes to apply to a home practise as well (though this is no way a necessity). This will ensure the biggest results on your wellbeing and health. Sometimes life gets in the way, so we live by the motto, ‘Move every day, connect with yourself everyday and carve out some you time’. Even if it is just for 5 minutes.
Is it all 'ommms' and chanting?
Absolutely not! You can make your practise as spiritual as you would like. All practises end with the phrase ‘Namaste’ but that is the only group word that is said. It’s a way of saying thank you. Some people come to yoga for its long and rich history and the spirituality they feel when practising it and some people come to stretch their tight hips and backs. Everyone is welcome.
How serious is it?
At Antara Yoga, we have a lot of fun. We work hard during classes and have a lot of laughter and smiles whilst doing it.
I have an injury/a disability/am pregnant, can I take part?
Yoga is an incredibly inclusive practise. If you are pregnant, have a specific injury or disability, please contact us before booking so we can help find the right class for you.
